The Digital Product Passport is becoming one of the most important components of Europe’s emerging product data infrastructure. Its purpose is to increase transparency, support the circular economy, facilitate regulatory compliance, and provide structured information about a product throughout its lifecycle.
At the same time, the development of answer engines, procurement agents, and agentic commerce is creating a different need. An AI agent must know not only what a product is and what it is made of. It must also determine:
- who can supply it;
- whether it is suitable for a specific application;
- which configuration is available;
- how much it costs;
- what the minimum order quantity is;
- when it can be delivered;
- which documents the supplier can provide;
- whether service support is available;
- which data must be collected before requesting a quotation;
- how to initiate a Direct RFQ process.
This is where the concept of the A2A Card emerges: an agent-qualifiable profile of a company, product, offer, service, or operational capability.
Is an A2A Card therefore the same as a Digital Product Passport?
No.
The two solutions may contain some of the same information, but they serve different purposes, have different intended users, and carry different responsibilities.
The distinction can be summarized as follows:
A Digital Product Passport describes the identity, properties, compliance, and lifecycle of a product. An A2A Card additionally describes its commercial context: who can supply it, to whom, where, when, at what price, under which conditions, and how an agent can initiate a business process.
This does not mean that the A2A Card is simply a “larger DPP.” It is broader in the commercial and agentic dimension, but a DPP may be significantly deeper, more detailed, and more legally authoritative in relation to the product itself.
What Is a Digital Product Passport?
A Digital Product Passport, or DPP, is a digital collection of data assigned to a specific product, component, or material. The European Commission describes it as a digital identity card intended to store and provide access to information supporting sustainability, circularity, and product compliance.
The systemic foundation for DPPs was established by Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 on ecodesign requirements for sustainable products, commonly known as the ESPR.
The regulation creates a framework under which detailed requirements for specific product groups are to be introduced through delegated acts or sector-specific legislation.
This means that there is no single, identical DPP dataset for every type of product. Different information may be required for batteries, textiles, steel, construction products, toys, or industrial equipment.
Depending on the product category, a DPP may include:
- a unique product identifier;
- manufacturer and responsible economic operator data;
- technical properties;
- material composition;
- information about material origin;
- durability data;
- repairability information;
- availability of spare parts;
- operating and maintenance instructions;
- disassembly information;
- reuse possibilities;

The exact dataset will depend on the legislation applicable to the relevant product group. It may cover technical parameters, environmental information, circularity characteristics, and compliance-related data.
A DPP Is a System, Not Just a File or QR Code
A Digital Product Passport should not be reduced to a QR code placed on a product.
The QR code or another data carrier is only a means of accessing the passport. The actual DPP is part of a broader data architecture that includes:
- unique product identification;
- a data carrier;
- data hosted by the responsible economic operator or a technical service provider;
- access rules;
- an EU registry of identifiers;
- interoperability standards;
- responsibility for data accuracy and maintenance.
The EU DPP Registry is intended to function as a central index of product passports. According to European Commission information, the system is scheduled to become operational on July 20, 2026.
The registry is expected to store unique identifiers and required registration data, while detailed product information will remain in a decentralized architecture controlled by responsible economic operators or DPP service providers.
In July 2026, the European Commission also adopted the first set of harmonized standards supporting Digital Product Passports.
One of the first important product groups subject to mandatory passports will be selected batteries. The obligation is expected to apply from February 18, 2027, to categories such as electric vehicle batteries, industrial batteries, energy storage batteries, and batteries used in certain light means of transport.
What Is an A2A Card?
The A2A Card is a concept being developed as an open B2B commercial data profile intended for:
- answer engines;
- procurement agents;
- sales agents;
- procurement systems;
- semantic search engines;
- agentic commerce platforms;
- Direct RFQ processes.
It is not part of European Union legislation and is not an official component of the Digital Product Passport framework.
It is also not the same as the official A2A Agent Card used by the Agent2Agent protocol.
An official Agent Card is a JSON document describing an AI agent, including:
- its identity;
- skills;
- endpoint;
- technical capabilities;
- authentication requirements;
- supported communication methods.
The A2A Card discussed here has a different subject. It may describe:
- a business;
- a product;
- a specific offer;
- a service;
- a production capability;
- a service capability;
- availability;
- documentation;
- logistics conditions;
- supported commercial actions.
A more precise full name would therefore be:

The A2A Card Is a Family of Cards
In a practical implementation, the A2A Card should not be treated as one oversized document. It should be a family of connected objects.

Describes the company as a potential business partner:

Where Do DPP and A2A Card Overlap?
The greatest overlap exists between the Digital Product Passport and the A2A Product Card or A2A Compliance Card.
Both may include:

- compliance information;
- operating instructions;

The preferred architecture is to treat the DPP as an authoritative reference source for relevant parts of the A2A Product Card.
The A2A Card may expose the information most important for procurement qualification and then direct the agent to the relevant passport when deeper verification is required.
This may include checking:

Why Should the A2A Card Not Copy the Entire DPP?
DPP legislation and standards assume a complex, interoperable product data system operating throughout the lifecycle of a product.
In industrial environments, the DPP may be implemented through technologies such as the Asset Administration Shell, a standardized digital representation of an industrial asset.
Projects such as DPP4.0 are developing machine-readable and human-readable methods of documenting product information for companies, authorities, service providers, and users.
Copying the entire DPP into an A2A Card would create several problems:
- two separate sources of truth;
- risk of conflicting data;
- duplicated update processes;
- uncertainty about which source is authoritative;
- risk of publishing information subject to restricted access;
- higher implementation costs.
Instead, the A2A Card should store:
- the DPP identifier;
- access URL;
- passport status;
- responsible economic operator;
- verification level;
- available data modules;
- date of last verification;
- access rules.
Why Is a DPP Alone Not Enough for a Procurement Agent?
A DPP may tell the agent that a stretch film:
- is made from a specified polymer;
- contains a certain percentage of recycled material;
- has particular technical characteristics;
- originates from a specific manufacturer;

- should be recycled in a specified way.
It does not necessarily answer:

These are separate data layers.

The relationship between A2A Card and DPP highlights another important architectural principle: a product and an offer should be separated.
Product Data Is Relatively Stable
Product data includes:

Offer Data Is Dynamic

A DPP Does Not Replace Direct RFQ
A Digital Product Passport describes an existing product.
A Direct RFQ describes a buyer requirement that may only later lead to the selection of a product.
For example:
We require a pallet wrapper for 150 pallets per day. Pallet dimensions are 1,200 × 800 mm, height up to 2,200 mm, and weight up to 900 kg. A prestretch level of at least 200%, loading ramp, delivery, installation, training, and service support in Poland are required.
No DPP belonging to a single pallet wrapper can independently determine whether the machine is the best answer to that request.
The agent must:
- read the Direct RFQ;
- find appropriate A2A Product Cards;
- verify the technical data or DPP;
- check compatibility;
- find relevant A2A Offer Cards;
- compare service and commercial conditions;
- prepare a recommendation.
DPP as a Source of New Procurement Criteria
The Digital Product Passport may significantly change the RFQ process.
In the future, a procurement agent may specify:
- minimum recycled content;
- maximum carbon footprint;

- absence of specified substances;

A Direct RFQ may include a condition such as:

Could the DPP Eventually Take Over Some A2A Card Functions?
Yes, particularly in the product-data layer.
The DPP is being developed as a broad digital container for product information. Identification technologies such as GS1 Digital Link can connect identifiers including GTIN, GLN, batch numbers, and serial numbers with digital product resources.
In the future, DPPs may link to:
- instructions;
- service materials;
- certificates;
- spare parts;
- repair services;
- manufacturer pages;
- traceability information;
- warranty information.
This does not automatically mean that they will take over the full commercial layer.
Price, stock, delivery cost, payment conditions, and fulfilment capability depend on a particular seller, market, and point in time. They change much more quickly than the basic identity of a product.
The most likely model is:
DPP as a durable product-truth layer, with the A2A Offer Card as a dynamic commercial layer.
Alternative Scenario: DPP as a Service Platform
It is possible that DPP solution providers will gradually add commercial and service modules such as:
- spare-parts ordering;
- repair booking;
- warranty registration;
- resale;
- rental;
- remanufacturing;
- product return;
- purchase of consumables.
In such a scenario, the boundary between DPP and agentic commerce may partially blur.
The basic distinction would still remain:
- identity and lifecycle data belong to the DPP;
- a specific seller offer remains a separate commercial event;
- buyer requirements still require an RFQ;
- an agent mandate still requires separate control.
The A2A Card could then function as an integration layer connecting DPP data with multiple sellers, offers, and actions.
How Should an A2A Card Be Prepared for the Development of DPP?
Do Not Build a Competing Passport
Do not create a separate proprietary “DPP” field when an official product passport exists.
Preserve Product Identifiers
The A2A Product Card should support:
- GTIN;
- GLN;
- manufacturer identifier;
- serial number;
- batch number;
- DPP identifier;
- registry identifier.
Separate Source Data From Commercial Data
Material and compliance information should come from the manufacturer, DPP, or official documentation.
Price and delivery information should come from the seller.
